Simple Start to Google Earth
Google Earth is a powerful psuedo-GIS software program that delivers the most
accurate and current spatial data readily obtainable to the internet community.
It is free, easy to use, and a great way to learn more about our Earth.
First, download and install Google Earth from the web site. You'll need
administrator privileges, of course. It helps a lot to have a powerful
computer with a fast internet connection!
You should spend some time getting to know the program and read through the
simple tutorial and help pages.
For the Virtual Tours below, you may want to do these things:
- Load a .kmz file in Google Earth. Just click on one of the
hyperlinked Virtual Tours below. The link opens a .kmz file, which is
a compressed Google Earth hypertext file. Your browser should
uncompress the file and launch Google Earth to read it. The
uncompressed .kml file will then load into your Places/Temporary Places
folder, at the left of your Google Earth screen. When you exit, you'll
have a chance to save your Temporary Places to your Places/My Places folder,
or you can do it right away with a Right-click/Save to My Places.
- To change the display properties for the route, right-click on the title
of the .kml file and select Properties. Here is a
graphic. Change to the Style, Color
tab and make the line thicker and a different color (graphic).
It should appear much easier now.
- Use the mouse with the hand icon to move around on the screen, and use
the navigation toolbar in the upper right corner to adjust the zoom,
orientation, and view angle. It's very useful to zoom in, tilt the
view down, and follow your route, as in this
graphic.
