QuickTime is a multimedia architecture that undergirds a great many Macintosh and Windows applications. Of course, many know of QuickTime in connection with linear media produced by video applications such as iMovie, Final Cut Studio and audio applications such as GarageBand and Logic but there's much more to QuickTime than that.

QuickTime also provides the opportunity to develop immersive experiences with QuickTime VR and it can be highly interactive, customizable and is extensible as well. It can be automated, scripted and delivered via Podcasting and iTunes, cell phones the web, applications, streamed in real time or progressively downloaded. Its file format is the foundation of the new HD MPEG-4 video format.

Given this potential for illumination and representation, it is not difficult to understand why QuickTime is of special interest to educators as a very flexible toolbox for developing audio/visual materials to facilitate teaching and learning. The research and development chronicled here is driven by these realizations.
