About the B.S.The Bachelor of Science degree in Outdoor Education at GCSU is offered through the Department of Kinesiology. Students completing the undergraduate program will be prepared to work in a variety of settings, such as federal and state parks, camps, outdoor and environmental education centers, schools, youth agencies, and wilderness therapy programs. They are prepared to provide safe, environmentally sound, and effective services and programs in outdoor education. The program is multifaceted: in addition to the core requirements in outdoor education (33 credits), each student completes service learning components, nationally recognized trainings, and an additional course of study in a cognate area of specialization (27 credits). Cognate specializations include therapeutic use of adventure, management, and environmental education. Trainings include American Canoe Association canoe and kayak training, Wilderness First Responder through the Wilderness Medicine Institute, and others. The foundational experience of the BS program comes during the technical cohort, a group of courses designed to provide a strong foundation in a variety of outdoor skills. These include rock climbing, caving, challenge course facilitation, whitewater canoeing, sea kayaking, and tree climbing. The cohort program takes full advantage of the mountain, river, and coastal environments of the southeast region to facilitate learning these skills. For more information...
